Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary & Anshi National Park Dandeli

Location : Uttara Kannada, Karnataka - India.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

Dandeli houses the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, which is designated as the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka adjoining Anshi National Park . The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a tiger reserve in the year 2007. The dense deciduous forests of the Sanctuary are crisscrossed by the meandering streams of River Kaneri and River Nagajhari, which are the tributaries of River Kali.

The forest in Dandeli is typical moist deciduous and semi evergreen types, with pockets of every green. The breathtaking valleys, regal looking meandering rivers and the splendid scenic beauty of the syntheri rock make it an awe inspiring experience. Spread over 834.16 sq.km the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary is the second largest in Karnataka and is contiguous with the Mahaveer sanctuary in Goa. The undulating streams, swaying bamboos, abundance of wildlife, sylvan surroundings and trekking tracts make sanctuary a unique holiday destination.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary has become a paradise for migratory as well as natives birds. Here, you will see a colourful variety of birds all around the park. The most prominent bird is hornbill which are present in large number in the park. The area is also rich in bamboos, herbs and climbers many of which have medicinal value. It is famous for its high quality Teak (Tectona grandis), Silver Oaks (Grevillea robusta), Eucalyptus, Acacia and Bambusa.

Flora and Fauna in Dandeli National Park


Flora
- The forests in the area are rich in flora and fauna. Trees and plants that can be found here Ain, Kinjal, Teak, Hirda, Jamba, Mango, Ficus and Bamboos many more.

Fauna - A variety of Bonnet Macaque, barking deer, spotted deer, mouse deer , Indian bison, Malabar Civet, Malabar giant squirrel, pangolin, giant flying squirrel and sloth bear make their home in the forests of the park. The black panther, elephants and tigers are rare species to found in the Anshi National Park Dandeli. Reptiles spotted in the park include the  King Cobra, Python, Krait, Rat snake and Viper. The reptilian and amphibian fauna of the region include a variety of ruffles and frogs.

Birds Species - There are more then 200 species of birds found here Malabar Trogon, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Paradise Fly CatcherCeylon Frogmouth, Emerald Dove, Pompador Pigeon, Lesser Adjutant Stork.
